last weekend kita and i went to our friends becky and brian’s wedding in NYC. this poem by ee cummings was one of the readings:
i carry your heart with me
i carry your heart with me(i carry it in
my heart)i am never without it(anywhere
i go you go,my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing,my darling)
i fear
no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want
no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)
and it’s you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is youhere is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows
higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that’s keeping the stars aparti carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)
i thought it was extraordinary. i am always a sucker for weddings, but this really got to me. i think it captures love very well: both on the person-to-person and the inter-galactic / collective soul levels.

Thanks for writing out the words to this poem. It’s one of those rare ones that seeps somehow into the deep heart. It was used pretty effectively in “Candy”, an Australian film with Heath Ledger and Abbie Cornish. Not a great film, but it stuck to the ribs nonetheless.
I love this poem, its so beautiful. The first time I heard it was in a movie called “In her Shoes” with Cameron Diaz. I’ll remember it forever :’]
{P.S. I thought the movie “Candy” was an awesome love movie.}
This is one of the greatest love poems i have ever heard! And I love, love poems! Thanks so much!!
I read this during my best friend wedding cerimony…it was my little gift for them and I still get emotional reading it and thinking of that beautiful day! they love each other so much!!
